Idealz

Idealz is built on winning, so a Christmas event for them had to do more than look festive. It had to feel like the moment before a prize is revealed. The venue was a raw hall with black drape and exposed services, which meant everything the audience would see had to be built rather than borrowed from the room.

Idealz Christmas event set with a striped portal and illuminated marquee letters built by Proink

The build

Proink designed, fabricated and installed a full event set: a portal structure, illuminated signage, giant letters and a prize reveal wall.

The structure is built from candy-striped columns and beams in red and white, forming a portal that frames the space and creates an entrance. Stripes are doing a lot of work here. They read as Christmas, as fairground and as gift wrap simultaneously, which means the set communicates the season without a single snowflake or tree.

Marquee bulb lighting runs through every branded element, on the welcome arch, the letters and the arch outlines. Exposed filament bulbs are the visual language of funfairs and old cinema frontages, and they do something modern LED strip cannot: they photograph as warm points of light rather than as an even glow, which is why fairground signage still looks like nothing else.

The giant Idealz letters are freestanding, bulb-lit and floor-mounted, working as wayfinding, as a photo moment and as the thing people stand in front of when they post about the event.

The prize wall is the centre of the whole idea. A red panel with three tall arched openings, each outlined in warm light, which turns the reveal mechanic into architecture. A visitor does not read about a chance to win, they stand in front of three doors.

Everything was built for a venue that offered nothing. Black drape, concrete floor, exposed ducting. Every surface the audience sees is a surface Proink produced.

Why it works

The best event builds give people something to do rather than something to look at, and the three arches do exactly that. Choosing a door is a physical action with a moment of suspense in it, and suspense is what Idealz sells.

Bulb lighting is the reason this photographs as well as it does. Warm points of light against a black venue read as celebration in a way that flat panel lighting never does, and at a Christmas event the photographs are a large part of what the client is buying.

Stripes solve the Christmas problem elegantly. Most seasonal builds reach for the same shorthand of trees, snow and baubles, which dates instantly and looks like every other brand. Red and white stripes carry the season while staying entirely on the brand's own terms.

Building the whole environment in a bare hall is the underlying capability. There was no architecture to work with, so the set had to supply the room as well as the brand.
